William Clark Wins Scholastic Regional Art and Writing Award

2013 Mar 11

The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards of Central and Southern Indiana is pleased to announce its 2013 regional winners. From Brownsburg, William Clark, a student at Brownsburg East Middle School, received: Honorable Mention for Sculpture.

More than 1,000 students from 54 counties competed for these honors. To honor award-winning students, an exhibition entitled "Visions and Voices" will be held at Clowes Memorial Hall of Butler University through March 17. In addition, awards will be presented during a ceremony at Clowes Hall on Sunday, March 17, at 4 p.m.

The Scholastic Awards were established in 1923 by Maurice R. Robinson, the founder of Scholastic Inc., "to give those high school students who demonstrate superior talent and achievement in things of the spirit and of the mind at least a fraction of the honors and rewards accorded to their athletic classmates for demonstrating their bodily skills."

A bold idea at the time, this mission is still relevant today, as proven by the more than 700,000 submissions the Alliance has received over the past five years.

Works submitted to the Scholastic Awards are judged on the following criteria: originality, technical skill, and the emergence of personal voice. Students who submit work are first judged regionally and works selected as gold key are then judged nationally in New York City.

At the national level, seniors compete for a $10,000 cash scholarship as part of the Portfolio Gold Medal Award. Partnerships with more than 60 colleges and universities make nearly $5 million in scholarships available to national winning high school seniors, with additional cash awards offered to students in all grades, as well as teachers.

March is recognized nationally as Youth Art Month (YAM), which is observed annually to "emphasize the value of art education for all youth and to encourage support for quality school art programs."
